A Multi-Theory View on Organizational Capability Strategy in Complex Knowledge-Intensive Firms

This paper merges a constellation of theoretical arguments into a vehicle for critically analyzing key antecedents that might lead to new reasoning regarding strategic choices of economic and functional structure. It reflects a typology approach to theory building through review of existing literature on Technology-Based Contingency Theory, Knowledge Management, and Transaction Cost Economics accompanied by extraction of inter-related dimensions and causal interactions. It identifies “bridge constructs” that may offer useful insights both for theory extension and practical consideration by mangers seeking superior performance in modern organizations, particularly professional service firms. Implications for management education and health service delivery are discussed.
