On the first day of class, most professors “go over the syllabus.” This typically entails an instructor-led presentation and/or discussion. The exercise described here used mind mapping instead. On the first day of an undergraduate management elective, students were randomly assigned to small groups, then given the syllabus, colorful markers and flip chart paper. After the mind maps were drawn, students presented them. We compared the efficacy of mind mapping to a control group that used the traditional instructor-led approach. Instructions on how to use mind mapping for syllabus review and the results of the empirical study are included.
